In the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, agate is regarded as a sacred stone, listed among the “Seven Treasures” (saptaratna) recorded in the Kangyur (Bka’ ’gyur), the Tibetan Buddhist canon. The Lotus Sutra praises it as a gem that “possesses all worldly adornment,” while the Kālacakra Tantra refers specifically to black agate as a “vajra stone that dispels ignorance.”
This ring, featuring an oval-shaped agate set in sterling silver, draws inspiration from the sacred forms of protective seals and ritual reliquaries. Its form reflects both spiritual symbolism and physical function.
In Vajrayana practice, black agate is widely used in ritual tools and representations of wrathful deities: embedded in the core of vajras, carved into phurbas, inlaid into ga’u amulet boxes, and even used in the adornment of Mahākāla statues. Monks often use agate malas during mantra recitation, believing that it helps stabilize the mind and enter samādhi. In domestic rituals, raw agate was buried at the four corners of a house’s foundation to ward off lightning and protect the home.
